Sept 7, 2019 – Design and Build a Car
NASCAR is built around the concept of taking a vehicle that has the same parts as everyone else and making that car travel faster in a given distance than the competition. In this Saturday MASA camp, students will be provided a common set of equipment and will be challenged to design and build a car that will travel faster than the competition. Will your car take the checkered flag?
Oct 12, 2019 – Pressurized Water Rockets
Werner von Braun helped launch the American space program in the 1960’s by working to develop rockets that were safe and consistent. In this Saturday MASA camp, we will be building rockets that use pressurized air and water to launch hundreds of feet into the air. Participants will learn about fin design and placement, nosecone development and also parachute recovery systems. Once designed, students will compete to see whose rocket will fly the highest, and also whose rocket has the longest hang time (time in the air from launch to landing).
Nov 9, 2019 – Rubber Band Powered Boats
Stored potential energy can be used for a variety of projects and tasks. In this Saturday MASA Camp, participants will make a motor boat that is powered by energy stored in a stretched rubber band. Once constructed, each boat will participate in a race to the finish line to see which one is the most efficient at converting potential into kinetic in order to win the day!
Dec 7, 2019 – Microscopes
In the 1600’s, several scientists began using lenses to analyze very tiny organisms that are otherwise invisible to the human eye. In this Saturday MASA Camp, participants will make wet-mount slides of plant and animal cells, and will also discover a world of organisms that live in a single drop of pond water. Come and learn about the basic unit of life that all living organisms share; the cell.
Jan 25, 2020 – Model Airplanes
Ever since the Wright brothers, people have been trying to build airplanes that convert stored potential energy into moving kinetic energy. In this Saturday MASA camp, the challenge will be to use the energy in a wind-up rubber band propeller to design and build a plane that stays in the air for the longest amount of time. Do you have the “Wright” stuff to compete in this challenge?
Feb 8, 2020 – Valentine’s Day Electric Circuits
In this holiday themed MASA Saturday camp, participants will use electric circuits to make Valentine’s Day LED light-up hearts and also to make a Valentine’s Day Style miniature Operation Game. Students will learn about simple circuits, electric conduction and basic electrical components.
March 7, 2020 – March Madness STEM
Calling all basketball fans! In this sports themed MASA Saturday Camp, participants will build a catapult to fire their ping-pong basketball that will shoot 3-point baskets. They will also build a straw target (hoop) and will take turns trying to see who can win a timed 3-point shoot-out by scoring the most baskets in a given amount of time.
April 4, 2020 – Solar Oven Smores
Our Sun provides the energy used by most of the living organisms on our planet and also warms our planet. In this Saturday MASA camp, participants will build a solar oven that focuses the power of the Sun into a central cooking area in order to achieve the highest temperatures. We will also use magnifying glasses to further focus the power of the Sun in order to toast the marshmallows we will be using in our recipe.
May 2, 2020 – Sun Powered Science
Why do we need to wear sunscreen when we go outside? How does the water cycle work? How powerful is the light and heat from the Sun anyway? Come to this Saturday MASA camp as we work to answer these questions through a variety of STEM activities all centered around our closest star; the Sun! Participants in this MASA camp will experiment with sunscreen, will make a solar still to turn dirty water into clean water and will use magnifying glasses to focus light.
