October 6th, 2018: LEGO Robotics
LEGO has come a long way since your MASA instructors were little. Today you can program them to drive around by themselves and navigate a track! Come to this MASA camp and learn how to build a LEGO Mindstorm robot and also how to program your robot to drive through our obstacle course performing tasks along the way!
November 3rd– Trebuchet Challenge
In medieval times, one of the scariest devices was the trebuchet; commonly known as a catapult. The trebuchet used a first class lever attached to a very large weight in order to throw a much lighter projectile across several hundred feet and into the sides of castles in order to break down the walls. Come to this MASA Saturday camp and we’ll teach you how to build a miniature version of the trebuchet. At the end of this camp, we’ll even construct a ‘castle’ made out of Styrofoam cups for you to target and destroy!
December 1st, 2018: Homemade Board Game
Do you love Monopoly? Got an urge to play Battleship? Come to this MASA Saturday camp and we will work to design and build your very own board game using recycled parts. Participants will also have time at the end of the camp to try out each other’s inventions. Who knows…we may discover the next Milton Bradley in our camp!
January 12th, 2019: SPHERO Coding
Block coding is the simple use of block commands to guide a robot from one point to another. Join us in this MASA Saturday camp and we’ll use several SPHERO SPRK Plus robots to learn how to block code. Once you’ve got the hang of coding, try to write a code that will allow your SPHERO to navigate our maze from beginning to end without any outside help!
February 2nd, 2019: Homemade Kites
Kites have been flown for centuries in many different countries. Before you could run down to the corner shop and purchase a wood and nylon kite, people had to make their own out of found materials. Join us for this MASA Saturday camp and we will be making and test flying our very own recycled kites. Come and find out if you can build a kite that is the highest flying of them all!
March 2nd, 2019: Rube Goldberg Simple Machine Device
Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist who was famous for drawing pictures of overly complicated machines that would perform simple tasks. If you’ve ever played the game Mousetrap, you have built a Rube Goldberg machine. In this MASA Saturday camp, we are going to use simple machines to make a Rube Goldberg device. Levers, Pulleys, Inclined Planes, Wheel & Axles, and others are the name of the game in this challenge!
April 13th: 2019: Superhero Rubber Band Bungee
Some people, definitely NOT your MASA instructors, enjoy jumping off bridges and cranes with giant rubber band bungee cords strapped to their bodies. The goal is to get the closest to the ground without actually hitting the ground. The idea for this MASA Saturday is the same. Can you add rubber bands that would allow your action figure to bungee from the edge of your table down to the ground and get the closest without touching? Once you master the table we’ll keep going higher and higher to increase the difficulty of the challenge. Join us to find out just how low you can go!
May 18th, 2019: Windmill Challenge
Humans have been harnessing the power of the wind for centuries to perform work. Just this past century we developed windmills that can generate electricity to run our electronics. Join us for this MASA Saturday and we will build windmills that will generate small amounts of electrical power. The challenge is to build the windmill that generates the most power in the class!
