Summer Camp 2009

June 15-19 Young Explorers and Inventors:

Grades K-1

  • Let’s Start From The Beginning!
    We are going to explore the “cradle of civilization” – Mesopotamia! Did you know banking originated in Mesopotamia? Some of the earliest writing was also developed by the people of Mesopotamia - the ancient Sumerians. Come learn about ancient architecture, communication systems, art forms, and the contributions of our ancient ancestors that affect us today! Students will use role-play, exploration, digital storytelling, and critical thinking skills to discover the successful development and foundation of civilization! Through lots and lots of hands on inquiry based activities, the young gifted learner will discover the ancient world of Mesopotamia!

Grades 2-8

  • The Room of Your Dreams
    Design and build the room of your dreams! Imagine you could have a room of any kind, used for any purpose, located anywhere and your budget was 1 million dollars, yes I said, 1 million dollars (I did say ‘imagine’)! What would you design? You will need a blueprint with accurate specifications and must be accountable for your 1 million dollars. What are the dimensions? What will it look like? What function will it serve? Let’s get to work, start dreaming!
  • Technotopia
    As I was taking apart my fax machine, you’ll never guess what I found….As I looked closer I could see a small city inside the hard drive….. Every wonder what’s inside a phone, a clock, or your hard drive? What about your Dad’s old fax machine or your mom’s watch? We will take apart all kinds of electronic devices to see how things fit together and to explore what else we may find!
  • Logic - Let the Games Begin!
    So you like to play games? What is the likelihood that you will win? What is the probability that you will lose? What are the chances that you and your opponent will tie the game? Are you sure?? Come learn, explore and develop statistical skills and concepts through creative hands-on experiences! Let the games begin!
  • Invention Convention
    Develop the skills of designers and inventors. Work with a team to design, build and test your own new inventions. Leverage your knowledge of forces, simple machines and conservation of energy to design and build a complex contraption to complete a simple task. Become the ultimate mechanical engineer, then design and build your own machine. Use technology to design a brochure to advertise and sell your invention.

June 22-26 Young Scientists and Researchers:

Grades K-1

  • Pharaoh, Pharaoh!
    Who were the ancient Egyptians and why did they choose to settle along the Nile River? Did you know the Egyptians used hieroglyphics to communicate and built pyramids for their leaders, or pharaohs? Come on, walk like an Egyptian as we discover the daily life of the ancient Egyptians through hands-on activities, problem-solving, and collaborative exploration! As archaeologists, we’re going to excavate our own ancient city! Perfect for the young gifted learner!

Grades 2-8

  • Energy
    Come learn about the different types of energy! Students will work independently and cooperatively as they follow their own experimental strategies and help each other experience sound, light, and electromagnetic energy. Come and create a machine from household items that makes a buzzer buzz, explore and experiment with types of sound waves, learn about light waves we see and electromagnetic waves we cannot see!
  • Planet X
    A new planet amazingly similar to Earth has been discovered within our solar system, and within reach by spacecraft! Researches are scrambling to develop a plan to explore and inhabit this new planet. What will the proposed environment be? What will be the source for food, energy, and water? What about housing, transportation, and environmental protection of air? What about a name? Join this special task force to plan the effort to inhabit this new planet! Come build a city in outer space!

  • Humpty Dumpty: Was It Really An Accident?
    Forensics is the application of science to solving crimes, and scientists are getting really good at it. There's no such thing as getting away without a trace. There's always evidence left behind. Are you creative? Can you think like a detective? Come join the fun of solving crimes and then participate in a mock trial. You be the judge, an attorney, a jury member or a witness. Develop poise, self-confidence, performance, and presentation, skills with this one of a kind hands-on experience.
