Teacher: Susan Lee
Grades 2 to 6
Jan 19th: Math Problem Solving
Using both individual and cooperative small group strategies, this course will present various problem situations that encourage multiple methods of solutions. Challenging problems lead students to learn approaches such as drawing diagrams and graphing, making lists, estimating, eliminating unreasonable possibilities, identifying patterns, guessing and checking, and using variables.
Feb 9th: Math Inductive Reasoning
What is the next term of the sequence 1, 12, 35? How do these numbers relate to triangular and square numbers? Students' introduction to inductive reasoning begins with a search for patterns in data and creating recursive and explicit formulas to describe those patterns.
March 8th: Math Deductive Reasoning
In deductive reasoning, students learn to use a system of logic to draw conclusions from statements that are accepted as true. Students encounter a variety of classic problem types as they explore symbolic logic and truth tables.
April 19th: Math Race Cars
Come build a race car out of index cards and tape. Using a ruler and scissors make a car that will meet certain mathematical requirements. After completing the car you will race your masterpiece against the other students cars.
May 17th: Math Connections
How is math and art related? How is math and science related? Have you ever wondered how math is related to other areas in our world? Come explore these topics using hands on activities.
