Teacher: James Cutcher
Grades 4 to 8

Jan 19th: Overview and Brief History of Biotechnology
Students will discuss and be exposed to the history, ethics, and career options that are available in the emerging field of biotechnology. We will discuss topics such as stem cell research and cloning. We will be using the Biotech Chronicles and developing "Most Wanted Projects" of biotechnology pioneers.

Feb 9th: Cellular Biology
Students will investigate the important cellular structures and functions of eukaryote and prokaryote cells. The students will also learn how to operate and use a light microscope by observing pre-made microscope slides. The students will learn why understanding cellular biology is essential to a career in Biotechnology.

March 8th: Cellular Chemistry (Biochemistry)
Students will explore the basic concepts of chemistry that are needed for a successful career in Biotechnology. Students will be introduced to the nature of matter, the atomic structure of matter, chemical bonding, and chemical reactions. Student will be performing hands-on and inquiry activities to help solidify the concepts.

April 19th: Microscopy
Students will use microscopes to investigate the world of unseen organisms. The students will visually observe plant, animal, and bacterial cells. The students will also make their own microscope slides as they investigate yogurt (bacteria), pond water, and their own cheek cells. Students will learn basic staining techniques.

May 17th: DNA-The Blueprint of Life
Students will understand the structure and function of the DNA molecule. They will also be introduced to basic genetics. They will explore this through various hands-on activities, including making their own DNA structure, extracting DNA from onions, and DNA Spooling.

James Cutcher has been teaching in Seminole County Public Schools for the last 4 years. He is currently teaching Biotechnology at Sanford Middle School; A Science, Math and Technology School. James earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of Central Florida and a master of science degree from the Florida Institute of Technology.
